The Visiting Cancer Sub-Specialist Programs is designed to bring optimal cancer care to residents of Maui County (including visiting patients from neighboring Molokai and Lanai). The Pacific Cancer Foundation has sub-contracted the expert services of comprehensive care specialists from three of Oahu’s top healthcare organizations. This means that patients from Maui County no longer have the added burden of having to fly to Oahu or the mainland to receive services related to cancer care and survival.
The Foundation contracts are with Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children, The Queen’s Medical Center and Kapi’olani Breast Center to bring services, which currently are not available to patients on Maui. Services that will be provided under these contracts are as follows:
* High Risk Breast Cancer Program Coordinator, Terri Imada, MSN, APRN
High Risk Breast Cancer Patients – Aside from female gender and advancing age, risk is greatly increased by inherited genetic mutations (BRCA 1 & BRCA 2), a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer and biopsy-confirmed atypical hyperplasia or lobular carcinoma in-situ (LCIS). Given the prevalence of breast cancer and the presence of known defined risk factors, many women wish to consider options that could help reduce their risk of developing the disease. Unfortunately, many women in this high-risk category are unable to access specialty-based high-risk services due to high costs, lack of medical insurance, lack of access to specialists, and poor access of these program in rural areas particularly those in Hawaii living on the neighbor islands.
* High Risk Breast Clinic is once per month in Maui. It is hosted at the Pacific Cancer Institute of Maui, located at the hospital Oncology department
